Stochastic channels

These simulations used a model of a 100 square micron piece of squid axon with the HH mechanism, but gating of the sodium and potassium channels was stochastic rather than deterministic, i.e. as if countably many channels are present. Total maximum conductances of all channels were identical to those of the standard HH mechanism. The channels were implemented with NEURON's Channel Builder.

Each set of figures shows superimposed results from two consecutive runs.

1. One channel per square micron. Ionic currents and membrane potential are very irregular.

2. Ten channels per square micron. Some irregularity persists because of stochastic gating.
