Neuron 7.4/7.5 and Bitdefender Free

Post by sseidman »

Versions 7.4/7.5 install on Windows 10 without issue, but when you try to run them with Bitdefender Free active, a window opens, then closes before you can read what's going on in it.

Turning BitDefender off fixes the issue. There are no "events" that Bitdefender catches, which is the only way to exclude a program in the free version. Turning Bitdefender off is the only workaround I've found.

This is not a problem for version 7.3

Is this a big deal? Is "Bitdefender Free" the latest hot antimalware software for MSWin?

Not particularly important -- I didn't ask for a fix, though I did think that having a clear record up on the forum might save the next person to have an antivirus problem the half hour it cost me. Also, as I'm about to ask 75 undergrads to install and use it, the more robust of a user experience, the less I'll hear about it, so I like to maintain my own list of issues that may arise. I'll certainly add "If it doesn't run right, try disabling your antivirus program, and try again" to my instructions.

Otherwise, you might just file away the issue in case it pops up in some other context during a future build.

Duly noted, Bitdefender Free does not play nicely with NEURON. Unfortunate, if the Wikipedia article's statement
As of March 2017, Bitdefender ranks third in the global ranking of Windows anti-malware application vendors by revenue.
is true.

I'd suggest that your students use one of the nrn-7.5.master-1638... installers from http://www.neuron.yale.edu/ftp/neuron/versions/alpha/, specifically:
* for MSWin http://www.neuron.yale.edu/ftp/neuron/v ... -setup.exe
* for OS X http://www.neuron.yale.edu/ftp/neuron/v ... 64-osx.pkg
* for Linux http://www.neuron.yale.edu/ftp/neuron/v ... x86_64.deb or
http://www.neuron.yale.edu/ftp/neuron/v ... x86_64.rpm depending on the user's Linux distribution (or download and compile the source code http://www.neuron.yale.edu/ftp/neuron/v ... 638.tar.gz)
