Absolute refractory period for IntFire2

Post by davidsterratt »

Hello all,

I was hoping to use NEURON for some very simple demos of integrate and fire neurons. One demo I'd like to do is an f-I curve of an IF neuron with an absolute refractory period.
IntFire1 has an absolute refractory period, but no bias current. IntFire2 has bias current but no absolute refractory period.

Before I dive in and start fiddling with the IntFire2 mod file so that it has a refractory period, I was wondering if there is a deep reason why the refractory period can't be incorporated into the analytical solution.

If it is possible to add a refractory period to IntFire2 and I can get it working, would there be interest in incorporating the code into NEURON?

David.

Offhand I can't think of a "deep reason" why a self event couldn't be used to create an
IntFire2 variant that has an absolute refractory period.

Unless something is judged to be of widespread interest, it generally won't be added to
the standard distribution. That said, there are two avenues for making code available for
attributed re-use. One, of course, is ModelDB
http://senselab.med.yale.edu/senselab/modeldb/
which is intended for published models. So if you do create an IntFire2 variant with an
abaolute refractory period, and use it in a model that leads to a published paper, please
accept my invitation and encouragement to enter that model into ModelDB.

The other is SimtoolDB
http://senselab.med.yale.edu/senselab/simtooldb/
which is in a very early stage--teetering on the brink of becoming a blastula of a
database, one might say.
SimToolDB provides an accessible location for storing and efficiently retrieving tools which aid simulations of neuronal and network compartmental models. Simulation tools can be coded in any language for any environment.
