Are you literally typing ^c (the carat character "^", followed by the letter "c") or are you holding down the CTRL (control) key and pressing c?

That explains it. Please note that ^x, where x is some character on the keyboard, is a commonly used notation that means "press the 'x' key while holding down the 'control' key".
