Missing "cm" in online references

Post by eacheon »

Hi,

Not knowing where is the appropriate place for this topic, please forgive me if this is posted to the wrong place.

I find there's no entry about "cm" in online references, neither "topology" nor "section". A search does not give me any result.

Hope it added to the document, but correct me if I ignore something somewhere. Thanks.

There is no independent entry in the Programmer's Reference for cm, but it is discussed in several articles--e.g. our first article in Neural Computation, called "The NEURON Simulation Environment" (get this from a link at http://www.neuron.yale.edu/neuron/docs)--and in many places in The NEURON Book (in particular, see chapter 5).

cm is specific membrane capacitance, and is part of the capacitance mechanism which is automatically inserted into every section--see
http://www.neuron.yale.edu/neuron/stati ... apacitance
The units of cm are microfarads/cm2 (sometimes written as uF/cm2 or even uf/cm2), and its default value is 1 uF/cm2. Like diam and v (membrane potential), cm is a range variable and can have a different value at each internal node of a section.
