Webcast tutorial: Introduction to the Neuroscience Gateway (NSG) -- A Portal for Computational Neuroscience

When: 10:00 - 12:00 PDT, 14 Mar, 2013

This workshop introduces participants to the Neuroscience Gateway (NSG), which is being developed for the computational neuroscience community with funding from the National Science Foundation. The NSG provides an easy and user-friendly environment to access XSEDE high performance computing (HPC) resources to run computational neuroscience software such as NEURON, GENESIS, MOOSE etc. The NSG's simple web-based interface makes it quick and easy to create an account, upload neuronal model code, run simulations and get back results.

The workshop will begin with an introduction of the NSG. This will be followed by a hands-on session in which attendees will use the NSG portal to upload neuronal models, set appropriate HPC parameters, run simulations with NEURON on XSEDE HPC resources, monitor simulation status, retrieve output results etc.

Agenda:

10:00 AM - 10:45 AM (PDT): Overview of NSG
• Background of NSG
• Software architecture of NSG
• Functionality of NSG
• How to use NSG
10:45 AM - 11:45 AM (PDT): Hands on usage of NSG
• Login
• Neuronal model upload
• Setting parameters
• Submission of simulation to XSEDE HPC resource
• Retrieval (and storage) of output results
11:45 AM - 12:00 PM (PDT): Questions and Discussion

For further details and registration: https://www.xsede.org/web/xup/course-calendar. Registration opens 9:00 PST, 12 Feb, 2013 and closes 16:00 PST, 8 Mar, 2013. This training session is offered at no charge.

The XSEDE website you link to:

https://www.xsede.org/web/xup/course-ca ... /class/109

says that the course is an in-person course (they make that quite clear, with large, bolded text). But your announcement says it's a webcast?

The Xsede portal calendar lists two events, both entitled "Introduction to the Neuroscience Gateway (NSG) -- A Portal for Computational Neuroscience" and both scheduled for the same time. The detailed descriptions of these events are identical in all regards except for the fact that one addresses attendees who will be physically present and the other addresses those who will attend via the Internet. The announcement I posted on the NEURON Forum describes the webcast event since most Forum subscribers are at sites remote from the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The NSG portal itself is accessible via the Internet, so as long as resources are not exceeded, attendees at remote locations should be able to participate in the hands-on activities.

As I finish replying to your query, 8 of the 99 "webcast registrants" slots have been snapped up. By the time you finish reading my reply, 98 of them may already have been nabbed.
