How do you make something PUBLIC in NMODL?

How do you make a variable a PUBLIC MEMBER in NMODL? I tried to input a value from hoc into an NMODL file (a channel) and it gave me an error saying that the specific variable I'm trying to insert the value into is not a public member of that NMODL file. Thanks!

The NEURON block specifies what parameters and assigned variables are visible to hoc.
Read about it in chapter 9 of The NEURON Book, or in
