NEURON 2007 Summer Course Information
If you aren't already familiar with the UCSD campus,
you should pick up this map :
http://hds.ucsd.edu/conference/muir.pdf
When and where does the course begin and end?
The course will start promptly at 9 AM on Saturday, June 23, 2007,
and it will end at 5 PM on Wednesday, June 27.
The classroom is room 003 in the Cognitive Science building,
which is building 397 at coordinate D7 on the muir.pdf map.
This is cleverly hidden by the big red rectangle that contains the words
REGISTER
MUIR CONF. DESK
but here's part of an older map that shows it:
How do I get to the UCSD campus?
See the directions on the third page of
http://hds.ucsd.edu/conference/muir.pdf
Registrants from outside the San Diego area will stay in block F of the Marshall I Apartments.
This is part of the building complex labeled 380 at D6.
These units have been set aside for our use from the evening
of Friday, June 22, until 11 AM on Thursday, June 28,
unless you have made other arrangements in advance.
You will be notified by email of your room assignment.
Room checkin and checkout
When you arrive on campus, register for your room at the
Muir Conference Desk on the first floor of Tioga Hall
(building 210 at B8 on the map -- see the big
Register Muir Conf. Desk
on the map).
The Muir Conference Desk is open from 7:30 AM to midnight seven days a week.
If you arrive after hours, telephone the on-call clerk at 858-534-1105.
Check-out time is 11 AM, Thursday, June 28, unless you have
made advance arrangements
for early arrival or late departure
with UCSD Conference Services.
Please note that UCSD charges $100 for lost keys.
Under the terms of our contract with UCSD,
they will bill us (the organizers of the course) for any lost keys.
This must never happen.
Quotes from information provided by UCSD:
- "there are no
telephones, alarm clocks, reading lamps, or televisions in any
of the rooms. Cable-ready television sets can be brought in
and hooked up at no additional cost."
Skip the TV--we'll all be too busy.
- "Towels exchanged daily, linen exchanged weekly, beds made weekly."
- "housekeeping service includes the following:
trash is removed daily and the kitchen and bathroom are cleaned,
however dishes are not cleaned by the housekeeping staff."
- "During the summer months, it may be necessary for
maintenance, painters, and custodians to enter campus
apartments/residence hall rooms for repairs. All campus
personnel entering apartments/residence hall rooms will be
identified by a UCSD picture badge."
- "UCSD is not liable for lost, forgotten, or stolen items left
in housing, meeting rooms or public ares."
Leave those diamond tiaras home, team.
Ditto for any stolen merchandise--you have been warned.
- "Pets and animals are prohibited in all housing areas
including rooms and/or dining spaces at all times.
Breach of this provision will result in a liquidated damage
charge of $50.00 for fumigation."
So if you are an animal, you will have to sleep and eat outdoors.
Rules and safety regulations
All who are staying on campus will receive a copy of rules and
safety regulations for residents of the halls and apartments.
I know you will read them, but here are a few highlights:
- "Keep doors locked at all times. Guests must carry their room
keys with them while away from their rooms."
- "Quiet hours are mandatory between 11 PM and 6 AM."
- "No amplified musical instruments and/or musical instrument
without a volume control may be played in the residence
halls." I won't bring my tuba if you promise to leave your
bagpipes home.
Meals
Lunch and coffee breaks will be provided to all course participants
at room 003 in the Cognitive Science building
from Saturday, June 23, through Wednesday, June 27.
Graduation dinner
On Tuesday, June 26, all participants
are invited to the course's "graduation dinner."
This will start at 6:30 PM at Parioli, which is located at
647 S Highway 101, Solana Beach (phone (858) 755-2525).
Here are driving directions from UCSD to the restaurant
(beware the misleading initial "left turn"
which Google maps insists on inserting, on the false assumption that we're
starting from Almahusrt Row).
The conference budget covers food and nonalcoholic drinks only;
if you must have Dos Equis etc., you'll have to pay for it yourself.
We will need volunteers to drive their colleagues to and from this event.
Please let me know if you will have a car in San Diego and are willing to help

Other meals
The registration fee for those who are staying on campus
also includes the cost of dinner and breakfast,
starting with dinner on Friday, June 22,
and ending with breakfast on Thursday, June 28.
These meals will be at the Sierra Summit
(the south end of building 225 at B8 on the map).
Sierra Summit is only open 45 minutes for breakfast and dinner.
As of this date, these meals run from 7:30 to 8:15 AM, and 5:45 to 6:30 PM,
respectively,
but be sure to check the serving times when you register for your room!
Messages
The individual units of the Marshall Apartments do not have telephones.
Incoming emergency calls during regular working hours (9 AM - 5 PM Monday
through Wednesday) can be directed to 858-534-8949.
Noone will be at that number on Saturday or Sunday.
Messages can also be left at the
Muir Conference Desk (858-534-1105),
where they will be posted on a bulletin board.
Parking on campus
Parking permits are required from 7 AM to 11 PM, Monday through Friday.
Permits are not required on weekends.
The cost of parking is included in the housing rate, and
you can pick up your permit when you register for your room.
If you are staying off campus and do not already have a permit,
you can purchase one at the Muir Conference Desk
for $6/day, $29.50/week (rates subject to change).
The permits are valid only for spaces marked by a yellow "S".
